Crocodiles and alligators are infamous carnivores, but it turns out they do not live on meat alone — scientists have unexpectedly discovered that these predators also eat other animals.
In a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from the University of California, Davis, and the Florida Museum of Natural History have found that crocodiles eat a wide variety of animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and even humans.
In fact, the researchers that the crocodile’s diet is so diverse that it could be used as a model to study the evolution of carnivory in other large carnivorous animals such as lions, tigers and leopards. The researchers studied the diet of a group of crocodilians known as crocodyliformes, which includes the world’s largest land-dwelling crocs, as well as other crocodilian species.
The researchers analyzed the diets of more than 1,000 crocodilicians from around the globe and compared them to those of other species of reptiles and birds.
