An article showing a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake sitting high in a tree prompted many emails and messages asking about its validity. It’s normal for rattlesnakes to climb trees, but it’s rare for them to do so on a large scale. The article in question was published in the August issue of the journal ZooKeys.
The article was written by a team of researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Park Service (NPS) in collaboration with the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), and several other institutions. What can snakes not climb?
Snakes can’t stick to walls like insects, rats, and lizards can. I have never seen snakes climb brick walls. If you have a snake in your home, it’s best to keep it out of the sun. If you live in an area that gets a lot of sun, you may be able to get away with keeping your snake indoors, but I don’t recommend it. It’s not worth the risk.

When brown tree snakes climb trees, no one has ever seen a snake move like that. By wrapping its tail around a tree or pole in a lasso-like grip and wriggling to propel itself, a brown tree snake can shimmy up structures that would otherwise be impossible. “It’s a very unusual behavior,” said study co-author Dr. Michael J. Smith, an associate professor of entomology at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

What kind of trees do snakes live in?
In the coniferous and deciduous forests, they can survive. They love deserts and the mountains. They can be found in tropical, subtropical, temperate and arid regions. In the tropics, they prefer to live in trees, but they will also live on the ground and in grasslands.
Do snakes fall out of trees?
Even though they were still mobile, the snakes were more likely to fall at the cold temperature than the warm one. The looped posture suggests that the temperature might have an effect on balance. The study is published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

In some cases, people were bitten by the snake while they were sleeping, or while trying to remove it from their bed.
Can a snake squeeze under a door?
Snakes can enter garages and basements through drain pipes or a crack under the door. Door sweeps and garage door thresholds can be used to seal openings that can allow snakes inside. Pet doors are an entry point for snakes. If you suspect that a snake is in your home, call your local animal control agency.
