It makes perfect sense to ban turtles from plane cabins. I’m not sure why anyone would really need to travel with their pet turtle, particularly in the cabin. Turtles are notorious vectors of Salmonella and a huge number of Salmonella infections in humans can be traced back to them. In fact, a recent study found that a single turtle can damage the interior of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
The study was conducted by a team of researchers from the University of California, San Diego, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and was published in Environmental Science and Technology Letters. They used a computer model to predict how much damage a turtle could cause to a plane interior, based on the size of the turtle and how long it had been on board.
According to their model, the largest turtle they tested, which weighed in at a whopping 4.5 pounds, could damage up to 1,000 square feet of interior space. That’s enough space to fit a full-size bed, an air conditioner and even a microwave oven.

Can you bring a reptile on a plane?
