They are found in tropical and subtropical waters throughout the world [3]–[5]. The gars were first described in the mid-19th century [6] and have since been widely used in aquaculture [7]. However, their use has been limited by a lack of knowledge about their physiology and ecology [8].
In this study, we report the first detailed description of the physiology, ecology, and life history of a species that is a keystone species for the management of benthic communities. We also describe a novel method for quantifying the abundance and distribution of this species in a large-scale, long-term study.

How long can gar breathe out of water?

This is the first time we’ve been able to show that they can do this in a non-human animal. It’s a really exciting finding, because it opens up a whole new area of research.” The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

All fish were caught by hand and weighed at the time of capture. Species were classified according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species (RTS).
RTS classifies species into three groups: (1) non-avian dinosaurs; (2) avian mammals; and (3) vertebrate fishes.
