In the study, researchers from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) analyzed the tears of two different species of crocodilians: the Nile croc, which is native to Africa and is the largest crocodilian on the planet, as well as the Crocodylus acutorostratus, also known as “the Asian Crocodile.”
The researchers found that both species shed tears at the same rate, but the crocs shed more tears in response to a threat, such as being attacked by a predator, than they shed when they were not in danger of being eaten by the predator.
