But a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found that the largest species of alligators, the alligator snapping turtle (Alligator mississippiensis), is the only one known to regrow severed limbs.
The study, led by researchers from the University of Florida and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, was published online today by the journal PLOS ONE. “This is a really important finding,” said study co-author and UF professor of ecology and evolutionary biology Dr. Michael J. Smith.
