Snakes have infamously poor eyesight, which is why they resort to sticking out their tongues all the time to get a sense of their surroundings. According to a new study, the creatures might have a way to improve their vision in the future.
A team of researchers from the University of California, San Diego, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have found that snakes can use their eyes to see in three dimensions.
The findings, published today in Nature Communications, could lead to the development of artificial vision systems that could be used in medical applications, such as vision-enhancing contact lenses or prosthetic eyes for amputees, the researchers said.
The study, led by NIST’s Dr. Michael J. O’Brien, a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering at the university’s Jacobs School of Engineering and Applied Science, focused on a type of snake known as the pygmy rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus).
Are snakes totally deaf?
Behavioral studies have suggested that snakes can hear, and now this work has gone one step further and explained how. In humans, sound waves traveling through the air cause tiny bones and hair cells in the cochlea, the part of the inner ear that converts sound into electrical signals, to move.
In snakes, however, these vibrations are transmitted through a different type of tissue called the auditory epithelium, which is made up of cells that vibrate in response to sound. The researchers found that when the snakes were exposed to a sound, they were able to detect it and respond to it, even though they did not actually hear the sound itself.
How do snakes see humans?
Vipers, pythons and boas have holes on their faces called pit organs, which contain a membrane that can detect infrared radiation from warm bodies up to one metre away. At night, the pit organs allow snakes to see an image of their predator or prey, giving them a heads-up that they are being watched.
In the new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and the California Department of Fish and Game used infrared cameras to track the movements of more than 1,000 snakes over a period of two years. They found that the snakes were most active during the day, when they could see their prey better than at night.
