Crocodiles and alligators are notorious for their thick skin and well-armored bodies. It comes as a surprise to learn that their sense of touch is one of the most acute in the animal kingdom.
In a new study published in Current Biology, a team of researchers from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, has found that crocodiles have the highest degree of sensitivity to touch of any vertebrate, including humans. In fact, they are the only vertebrates that can detect the slightest touch on the skin of their hands, feet, or even their faces.
It may also be a result of an evolutionary adaptation that allows it to survive in such a harsh environment.
