How do you take care of a cactus in a terrarium?
Between watering, allow your cactus to get bone-dry. When the soil feels completely dry to the touch, give it water about every 3 – 6 weeks. You can poke the cacti with a stick to see if it is thirsty. If it doesn’t move, it’s thirsty.
If you want to add a little more moisture to your soil, you can add 1/2 cup of peat moss per 1,000 sq. ft. of soil. This will increase the moisture content by about 1-2% per year, but it will take a few years for this to have an effect.
How do you make a cactus terrarium for a fish tank?
The bottom of the aquarium should be lined with two to three inches of pebbles. Four to six inches of commercially available cacti soil or a mixture of equal parts potting soil and coarse sand can be spread. The cactus will get good drainage from this. Next, fill the tank with water.
Add a few drops of aquarium salt to the water to help prevent algae from forming. You can also add a small amount of calcium carbonate (available at your local fish store) to your aquarium water if you don’t already have it.
If you do not have any of these items on hand, you can purchase them at a pet supply store or online. Once your tank is filled, place it in a sunny location away from direct sunlight for at least two weeks.
During this time, the plants will begin to grow, and you will be able to see the results of your efforts.
