These elements add tremendous visual appeal, but they also help to stimulation your pet’s natural drinking behaviors, and are a great way to keep your reptile hydrated. Waterfalls can also be used to create a more natural environment for your pets.
For example, if you have a large number of reptiles in your enclosure, you may want to consider adding a small waterfall to the bottom of the tank. This will allow the water to flow down into the enclosure from the top, rather than being forced up the sides.

How long does a terrarium last?
Under the right conditions, a perfectly balanced closed terrarium should thrive indefinitely. The longest known terrarium lasted 53 years. They may be able to beat the dinosaurs. But in reality, it’s not that simple. All of these factors can have a significant impact on the life span of any plant.
For example, if you grow a plant in a soil that is too acidic, then it will not be able to grow as long as it would if it were grown in an acidic soil. On the other hand, too little water can also be a problem, as can too much light. If the plants are kept in the dark too long, they can become stunted and die.
Does it rain inside a terrarium?
When you poor water into your terrarium you are starting the water cycle. Eventually, it will “rain” in the little glass world you have made!. When you set your terrarium in the sun, the water inside will heat up and turn into water in the air. The same process occurs when you pour water from a faucet into a glass of water. The water will evaporate from the surface of the glass, leaving behind a thin layer of vapor on the inside.
If you don’t have a humidifier, you will need to add a few drops of distilled water to your water every few days to keep it from drying out too much. You can also use a spray bottle to mist the tank with water, but be careful not to let it get too hot or the plants will not be able to take the moisture they need.
Can I use a plastic jar for a terrarium?
Glass jars, fish bowls and tanks, clear plastic bottles and food containers can all make fine terrariums. Make sure you have enough room in your container to hold your hand. If you are using a glass jar, be sure that the lid is securely fastened to the top of the jar.
If it is not, you will need to use a small screwdriver to loosen it. You can also use your fingernail to gently pry it off, but be careful not to damage the glass.
What do you put in the bottom of a terrarium?
To prevent plant roots from rotting, it is important to create drainage layers in terrarium containers. Coarse gravel, sea glass, or beach stones should be placed on the bottom of the terrarium. Does a terrarium need a lid?
We recommend that the lid be removed about once a week or daily in order to allow air to circulate around the terrarium. If you are using an aquarium heater, make sure it is set to a temperature of at least 70°F (21°C).

How much water do you put in a terrarium?
As a guideline, we recommend ¼ cup of water for a quart-sized terrarium, ½ cup for a half-gallon sized container, and 1 cup of water for a gallon size or larger. The soil needs to be moist to the touch after watering.
