Crocodiles and alligators are infamous carnivores, but it turns out they do not live on meat alone — scientists have unexpectedly discovered that these predators occasionally eat other animals as well.
In a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, a team of researchers from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) found that crocodiles eat a wide variety of animals, including birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds and even humans.
In fact, the team found evidence that the crocodile’s diet is so diverse that it could be used as a model to study the evolution of other carnivorous species, such as lions, tigers, leopards and hyenas.
The study, which was conducted by researchers at the UCSC and NOAA, was based on observations made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (FWS) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) along the eastern coast of North America.
