Tortoise foods should not contain high levels of salt, sugar, or other additives that may be harmful to your reptile’s digestive system. If you have any questions about the food you’re feeding, contact your veterinarian.

This is the number 1. All grains and legumes are not allowed for turtles. They shouldn’t be offered to tortoises in any form. Check the list below
- Turtles are not allowed to eat any fish
- Other crustaceans
However, they may eat small pieces of fish or shell fish (e.g. shrimp) if they are prepared in a way that does not pose a risk to the turtle’s health.

Do tortoises eat everyday?
It is a general rule to give an amount of food equivalent to the size of the tortoise’s shell. They should be fed once a day, 5 days a week. In the middle of the day or at night, the 2 starve days can be implemented. For example, if you have a 10-pound tortoiseshell turtle, and you feed it every other day for a month, it will grow to 10 pounds by the end of that month.
If you are feeding them every 2-3 days, they will continue to grow until they reach their full size. You will want to keep your turtle in a well-ventilated area, with plenty of fresh water. It is important that you do not allow the turtle to become dehydrated, as this can lead to a number of health problems.
What do tortoises drink?
All tortoises should have fresh water on a regular basis. The true desert species such as Testudo kleinmanni will drink from the right source of water. Tortoise water needs will vary depending on the tortoise’s age, size, diet and other factors. It is best to provide water at least once a day, but it is not necessary to do so every day.
If you do not have access to fresh water, you can purchase bottled water from your local pet store. You can also make your own water by adding a few drops of distilled water to a glass of water and adding some salt to taste.
