California gartersnakes will be active at night during very hot weather, but most of the time they are not active during the day. Sometimes they are found on land far away from water, but most of the time they are found in or around water. They are not aggressive and will not attack if you approach them. If you see one of these snakes in the wild, do not approach it.

Where do garter snakes hide at?
In addition to hiding in tall grass, snakes will also hide in yard debris. These reptiles like to hide in tall grasses and shrubs. Snakes can also be found in basements, crawlspaces, garages, and other areas that are not well ventilated. If you suspect a snake is in your home, call your local animal control agency.
Where does a garter snake sleep?
They may look for a natural place to live. Sometimes, they look for warm places inside structures and have been known to sleep in the basement of a house. Gartersnakes are nocturnal and are active at dawn and dusk. During the day, the snake is active in search of food and water. The snake may also be active during the night when it is searching for mates and mates’ eggs.
Where do garter snakes nest?
Garter snakes do not burrow their own holes. They utilize the holes of other animals or natural cracks in the soil. It’s possible to find shed skins in the spring or late summer. The garter snakes shed two to three times a year. Gartersnakes are active during the day and sleep at night.
During the daytime, they are most active at dawn and dusk. At night, the snakes sleep in burrows or under rocks or logs. The snakes may also be active when the temperature is below freezing. Garter snake hibernates during winter.
Do garter snakes climb trees?
Some garter snakes will climb a small tree or shrub which can be disconcerting the first hundred times you see one slithering down a low lying limb. Some people will feed on fish in the water. The cold blooded reptiles love to sun themselves on hot summer days. Gartersnakes are the most venomous snakes in North America.
They have the largest venom glands of any snake and are capable of delivering up to 1,000 milligrams of venom per millilitre of body weight. This is enough to kill a human being in a matter of minutes. It is not uncommon for a snakebite victim to have to be treated in hospital within a few hours of being bitten.
What attracts snakes to your house?
Snakes enter a building because they are lured in by dark, damp, cool areas or in search of small animals, like rats and mice, for food. Keeping the vegetation around the house cut short can make the home less attractive to small animals.
Do snakes return to the same place?
The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, was conducted by a team of researchers from the University of California, Davis, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and was funded by the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) under the auspices of NSF’s Division of Environmental Biology (DEB).
The study was led by UC Davis graduate student and study co-principal investigator, Dr. Michael J. O’Brien, who is also a postdoctoral fellow in DEB’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the university’s College of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (CRLS) in Davis.

Will garter snakes bite?
While most species are classified as harmless (non-venomous), their bite can cause minor swelling or itching in humans, and anyone bitten by a garter snake should seek medical attention immediately.
