The air goes into the primary bronchi once in the trachea. These look a bit like hooks in the two lungs and curve more sharply than those found in birds. Can Crocs breath underwater?
The crocodiles can hold their breath underwater for more than an hour. The ability to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body is dependent on a small fragment of the animal’s haemoglobin. The finding, published today in the journal Nature, could help to explain how cephalopods such as octopuses and cuttlefish breathe underwater.
The octopus is the world’s largest invertebrate, with a body length of up to 2.5 metres (8ft) and a wingspan of about 1.8 metres. It is also the only animal known to breathe air through its gills, rather than through the air sacs in its lungs, which is why it is often referred to as a ‘breather’ or ‘octopi-breath’.
But it also has a unique ability to hold its breath for longer than any other animal, thanks to a small piece of hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells, that helps to carry oxygen around the body and to keep it from being oxidised by oxygen-starved bacteria. This ability has been known for some time, but until now it had been unclear how it worked.
Do alligators have lungs?
In today’s issue of Science, the pair reports that, like those of birds, alligator lungs also use one-directional airflow. The air flows in the opposite direction of the animal’s body instead of moving into and out of air sacs as in mammals.

A new study in herpetology notes that crocodiles can climb trees despite their lack of physical ability. The team studied five crocodilian species in Africa, Australia and North America and found that they can climb as high as 30 feet.
“”Crocodiles have been climbing trees for millions of years, but until now, no one knew how they did it,” said study co-author and University of California, Santa Cruz, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, Dr. David Evans. “This study is the first to show that crocodilians are capable of climbing, and that they do so regularly.”

All of these reptiles are found in Africa and South America. The team used a combination of DNA and fossil evidence to determine the species and age of each species, as well as the amount of time that each animal spent climbing a tree.
They then compared their findings to the climbing ability of other reptiles, including birds and mammals.
Do crocodiles sleep underwater?
When it comes to sleeping, alligators prefer to sleep in the open water, even though they are known to rest underwater for up to 24 hours if necessary. Alligators can be found all over the United States, but they are most commonly found in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. In fact, the team’s findings suggest that it may be possible to develop a device that could be used to help humans with breathing problems, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), who are unable to use their mouths to breathe.
